It's mostly run from the terminal using Linux commands (but still has other applications like browsers on the imitation OS) and has it's very own scripting language called Grey Script, of which using said language, people have gone as far as making their own crypto block chain so that players can trade software and mine coins, as well as of course making their own software for various other purposes. It has single player and online mode with an active community on their Discord. It's continually being updated and is the most advanced hacking sim I've ever played outside of straight up CTF's like TryHackMe. If you like that there's a more in depth one from 2017, it's called Grey Hack and is my favorite hacking simulator of all time. Some examples: brute forcing a password with all possible combinations is guaranteed to work eventually but takes a long time whereas using a dictionary wordlist is much faster but might not get you the password, there are often multiple ways through a given target's security, you'll be executing kill chains where you compromise multiple non-target systems, route your connection to the target through those compromised systems, then wipe their logs to cover your tracks, everything is hackable if you're fast, good and have the tools, it's got a neat storyline with multiple endings or you can ignore that storyline and just go after high value target's, and it's got some command line functionality (though not as deep as what hacknet offers, and not as reminiscent of real life Unix commands outside of "ls") It really feels like analyzing security and deploying different real life hacks with tradeoffs. I want to also recommend Uplink if you're into that experience. It would be cool to see similar in future open world games but I doubt it'll ever happen. I just wish more games like CP 2077 would utilize a more realistic hacking method rather than the quick and generic that relies on your in game experience points and you against the clock rather than the experience of you actually learning how to hack a computer in the game.Īnyway, if you want to feel like a hacker, it plays on just about any low end laptop. I guess it's more aid for me role playing this hacker role. Outside of the game screen, there is a second window that shows a command terminal illustrating what the game is doing like "spawning thread for command probe". The game seems like it probably goes a lot deeper if you know what you're doing. I still find myself getting stuck on exactly how to proceed as it seems there might or should be more commands that I can do. So "kill 33" would kill PID # 22 service.I guess. "ps" lists all of the running processes and their PID. You can type "cd /home" to get back to the root of the system. I could even move his files around so for shits and giggles, I moved his boot file from his system folder to his bin folder.dunno if that really does anything in game or not. Port scan and run SSHcrack.exe 22 which then brute forced until it found a password and I was in. In the tutorial phase, I stole a file called SSHacker.exe or something like that. Steal files then delete the logs to cover your tracks. I don't know much about real world hacking but in this game, you receive and email, complete that given task then click reply before receiving another. Too bad they're not like binary commands or anything but still, it felt realistic. Like "rm *" which deletes all files in a server's folder. However I began playing Hacknet and it definitely has a learning curve but I felt like a real hacker to some extent. Fallout 3 was probably the closest and I liked the look of the terminal and green text while Deus Ex 3 is probably the worst I've seen. where you have the option to "hack" in a computer, never once felt like hacking to me. So many games like CP 2077, Deus Ex, etc. Please use flair to display what games you’re currently playing, not a punch line, username, tag, URL, or signature.
